FDA Issues PPA Warning

The FDA has warned the public not to take cold or diet pills that contain phenylpropanolamine (PPA). PPA has been linked to a higher risk of hemorrhagic stroke among young women. The FDA also asked manufacturers to stop selling drugs that contain PPA and to replace it with a safer ingredient. Many drug stores began pulling products containing PPA from the shelves and have posted warnings about the potential dangers.

Drugstores Pull PPA Products from Shelves

Major drugstore chains including Rite Aid, CVS Pharmacy, and Walgreens began pulling all over-the-counter drugs containing PPA from their shelves after the FDA issued a public health warning about cold medications and diet pills that contain the drug. Customers may want to consider cold medications that contain pseudoephedrine, an alternative to PPA. Unfortunately, no safer alternative exists for diet pills and consumers are urged to contact their physician for a solution.
